The Benefits of Solar Power
And how the Federal Government Will Pay for a Big Chunk of It!
The most significant benefit of solar power is how much money you’ll save per month. Average monthly cost savings on your electric benefit are between $50 and $60, according to the MIT School of Engineering.
Think about that in terms of the solar system’s 25-year warranty: At 300 months you could save anywhere between $15,000 and $18,000.
- You could buy another solar system outright.
- You could put this money away for your children, your grandchildren.
- You could invest this money and earn interest and dividends for retirement.
- You could pay down or completely pay off existing debts.
- The possibilities are nearly endless.
And the benefits of solar energy extend beyond any one person, to your friends, family and neighbors.
Because your home would largely become self-powering, you would no longer get your electricity from utility companies, which generate electricity from the burning of coal and natural gas. These produce carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, which is responsible for climate change/global warming, according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
By producing the majority of your home’s energy by solar panels installed on your roof by One Hour Air Conditioning and Heating, you would not be contributing to the erosion of the earth’s atmosphere and allowing radioactive heat to harm our planet.
By switching to solar energy, you would be doing your part to preserve the planet for your children and their children.
Think also about the future prices of utility-generated electricity: Because this kind of electricity is generated by the burning of coal and natural gas, which are finite, limited resources, the encroaching shortage of these resources means their prices will go up.
The electric company will increase the cost of your monthly electricity.
Why not get one step ahead of the electric company and start producing your own electricity with solar energy, a free unlimited resource, by installing solar panels on your home with One Hour Air?
Solar energy is also a great way to increase the value of your home. Whether you’re a flip-flopper or have been in your house for 20 years and are thinking about moving, a National Bureau of Economic Research study titled “Understanding the Solar Home Price Premium: Electricity Generation and ‘Green’ Social Status” found the installation of photovoltaic solar panels on a home adds a premium of more than $20,000 to a home’s price.
With the government subsidies, the potential to save $18,000 over 25 years, the benefit to the environment and your children, and the added value to your home, there’s truly no reason not to switch to solar power with One Hour Air.
You may be against solar energy because you think it’s a liberal initiative. But more conservatives and Republicans are recognizing the economic benefits of solar power and are encouraging people to make the switch.
Former Republican presidential candidate and current Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Republican Senators Chuck Grassley of Iowa, Cory Gardner of Colorado, Mark Kirk of Illinois, and Dean Heller of Nevada all spoke in favor of solar energy at the Conservative Clean Energy Summit in Washington, D.C., last year, according to Bloomberg.com.
And of course many Democrats and liberals are for solar energy, including former president Barack Obama.
So the matter of solar power is nonpartisan. The slew of benefits offered by solar power are being recognized on both sides of the aisle and can’t be ignored, for the country’s economic sake, for your wallet’s sake, for your children’s sake.
The federal-tax credit for residential solar power was supposed to expire on Dec. 31, 2016, but Congress extended the tax for five more years!
This is not a political issue, it’s a matter of saving you money.
And there’s also the potential to earn state-tax credits to help pay for the installation too.
New Mexico’s solar-tax credit program expired last year and efforts to expand it during the 2017 Legislature were halted by the end of the session, before either chamber could vote on a bill that would have extended the five-to-10-percent credit to 2025.
This bill will undoubtedly resurface during next year’s session and if it passes, you want your home to be already installed with solar power by One Hour Air so you can get the highest tax-credit rate!
The benefits of solar power are not constrained to residential properties, as countless city governments throughout the country have adopted solar energy to power their operations.
By the end of 2014, Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, Indianapolis, San Jose, Honolulu, San Jose, San Antonio, Denver, New York City, New Orleans, San Francisco, Raleigh, Sacramento, Las Vegas, Newark, Austin, Portland, Oregon, Jacksonville, Boston, and Albuquerque had converted to solar power, according to EcoWatch.com.
The City of Las Cruces was also among these and by 2016 had four solar arrays installed onto government buildings in order to save the city money. Another four solar arrays were installed throughout 2016, two of which operate on ‘net zero’—meaning the amount of energy those two buildings consume is equal to the amount of energy generated by the solar panels, according to the Las Cruces Sun-News.
That means the city doesn’t have to pay the electric company to power those two buildings.
If you don’t own your home but still want to get involved in solar power, consider becoming a member of a solar cooperative or start one yourself.
The way a solar coop (also called solar farms, gardens, or community solar projects) works is a group of people pool together money in order to buy and install a solar array on a patch of sunny land. The electricity produced by these panels can be sold to your electric company, which then reduces your monthly electric bill with Renewable Energy Credits (RECs), according to SolarResourceGuide.org.
The El Paso Electric Company administers this service through its Renewable Energy Interconnection program. For photovoltaic systems that produce less than 10 KWH a month, El Paso Electric credits $0.02 per KWH.
So, if you consume the national average of 900 KWH, at EPEC’s current rate of $.938 per KWH, your monthly bill is around $84 a month. If you are part of a solar coop, depending on how many KWHs are produced, that number multiplied by .02 would be reduced from your bill.
Solar Panel Installation Cost
- When you choose the Basic bundle package, you’ll pay: $57 a month for 18 months, then use your tax credits to pay down the remainder.
- When you choose the Efficient-Home bundle, you’ll pay: $99 a month for 18 months, then use your tax credits to pay down the remainder.
- When you choose the two-panel option, you’ll pay: $29.10 a month for 18 months, after which your remainder after a $974-tax credit will be $3,496.50. You will then pay $39.99 for 126 months.
The more solar panels you install on your home, the more tax credits you’ll receive!
Saving with Solar Energy
To understand the impact solar energy can have on your monthly savings, the first thing to understand is energy consumption, measured in kilowatt-hours (KWH).
- Each kilowatt of power produces about 100 kilowatts of consumable energy.
- The average American home in 2015 used about 900 KWH, according to the Energy Information Administration.
- To find your cost savings with solar energy, divide 900 by one of the three solar panels mentioned above by their kilowatts.
Example: 4.68 multiplied by 100 equals 468 KWH of consumable energy. 900 minus 468 equals 432. 432 divided by 4.68 (Efficient-Home bundle) equals $92.3.
This example presumes that your household uses 900 KWH a month. But if you’re mindful of turning off lights in rooms you’re not in and unplugging small electronics when not in use, you may see a significant decrease in your monthly KWH usage and so an even smaller monthly bill.
When you decide to go solar, One Hour Air will visit your home to take measurements of your roof, determine which areas of the roof have the most southward visibility and how the roof will be affected by shade as the day gets later.
SolarReviews.com collects reviews of solar companies and the performance of systems people throughout the country have installed in their homes. Based on more than 17,500 reviews, solar energy has a 4.75-out-of-5 approval rating.
WHAT SIZE OF SOLAR PANEL DO I NEED?
Residential homes can be easily served by any of the sizes of panels—1.14, 3.64, and 4.68 KW—One Hour Air Conditioning and Heating offers.
WHAT ARE THE MOST EFFICIENT SOLAR PANELS FOR MY HOME?
There are three primary types of solar panels used for energy conversion: monocrystalline, polycrystalline, and thin film. Most residential solar panels, including those One Hour will install on your home, are monocrystalline.
How Solar Panels Work
When the sun rises at around 7 a.m., your solar panels immediately start absorbing its light and convert it to direct-current energy. An inverter installed on the side of your home will convert the DC electricity to alternate current. An electrical panel will then distribute the required amount of electricity to power your home.
In the morning, as the panels are heating up, your home will only partially use electricity from the grid, but by the afternoon, your solar system will be working at its peak, keeping you completely off the grid.
Any energy your panels produce but your home doesn’t consume is credited back into the grid, which could mean your electric company could owe you for your energy production!
By 10 p.m., your home will be back on the electrical grid, running on the excess energy your home produced during the day.
